Paperback Verified download. It is a lovely story packed with magical realism and focuses on a botched kidnapping in a third world country. The kidnappers are amateur guerrillas who had hoped to capture the president of the nation as a prisoner, only to find that he was not present at the party they crashed by coming out of the air vents. The party was a birthday celebration for a renown Japanese businessman named Katsumi Hosokawa, and present was the vice president of the country, only a figurehead, and an internationally famous soprano named Roxanne Coss.

What starts off as a horrific situation of prisoners versus captors turns into something entirely different. Roxanne has the voice of an angel, one that turns men and women's hearts and souls toward her. She is beloved by many. Hosakawa in celebration of his 53rd birthday.

Hosakawa has loved opera since his youth and is in awe of Roxanne. Her singing brings forth emotions from inside him that he was never aware he even had. A new world opens up for him. The guerrillas release all the women except Roxanne, while the men remain prisoners.

The captors are a bunch of amateurs, mostly young, but all holding rifles.

As the captives and captors begin to interact during the hostage situation, the real beauty of this novel comes into play. It is based upon the novel of the same name by Ann Patchett. It was released on September 14, by Screen Media Films.

Roxane Coss Moore , a famous American soprano, travels to South America to give a private concert at the birthday party of rich Japanese industrialist Katsumi Hosokawa Watanabe. Just as a handsome gathering of local dignitaries convenes at Vice-President Ruben Ochoa's mansion, including French Ambassador Thibault Lambert and his wife Zylberstein , Hosokawa's faithful translator Gen Kase , and Russian trade delegate Fyorodov Krupa , the house is taken over by guerrillas led by Comandante Benjamin Huerta demanding the release of their imprisoned comrades.

Their only contact with the outside world is through Red Cross negotiator Messner Koch. A month-long standoff ensues in which hostages and captors must overcome their differences and find their shared humanity and hope in the face of impending disaster. In August , it was announced that Julianne Moore , Ken Watanabe and Demian Bichir joined the cast of the film, with Paul Weitz directing, from a screenplay he wrote alongside Anthony Weintraub, based upon the novel of the same name.

After that, he joined the terrorist group La Familia de Martin Suarez, named after a ten-year-old boy who was shot dead while handing out flyers for a political rally. Benjamin has left behind a wife and children, and he is fatherly to some of the young terrorists under his command. He is plagued with shingles, which rage across much of his face. Joachim Messner is a Swiss representative for the Red Cross.

He is the one person allowed to come and go from the mansion. Messner punctuates the general happiness with frequent reminders that the situation will end badly. Carmen is the terrorist whom Gen loves. Carmen remains incognito in the guise of a male terrorist for the first part of the novel.

The leader of the organization, General Benjamin, notices what a beautiful young woman she has become and notes that, "had she been this pretty before, he never would have let her sign up.

In the ultimate shootout, she is gunned down before Gen can get to her. In the ensuing newspaper articles, there is no record of her ever existing.

Simon Thibault is the French ambassador to the South American country where the novel is set.
